Built for Artists, Not Profit: Who We Are and What We Do

An independent record label in Manchester, founded in 2022 on one idea — put artists first. Here's who we are, what we believe, and how we help artists build real careers.

Every label says it's on the artist's side. We decided to build one that actually is.

Oscillation Records is an independent record label based in Manchester, working with artists all over the world. We're not a major, and we've never wanted to be. We're a small team of music lovers who believe the way most labels treat artists is broken — and that fixing it isn't complicated. You put the artist first, and you mean it.

This is the first post on our own blog, so it feels right to start at the beginning: who we are, why we exist, and what we can actually do for the music you're making.

Why we started

When Ben Sharp Knowles founded Oscillation in 2022, it wasn't to build another logo to stamp on release artwork. It came from a frustration a lot of artists will recognise — watching genuinely talented people hand their music to a label and get almost nothing back. No plan. No honesty. No real effort. Releases treated as afterthoughts, contracts that took more than they gave, and endless meetings that went nowhere.

We were convinced a label could work the other way around. Manchester has never had a shortage of talent or ideas, and neither does the internet. What's missing is people willing to do the unglamorous work of helping an artist's music actually land — the planning, the feedback, the follow-through. So we built one, around a single principle: put artists first.

That's not a slogan we reach for when it's convenient. It's the thing every other decision has to answer to.

What we believe

If "artist-first" is going to mean anything, it has to be specific. Here's what we hold to:

  • Artists keep creative control. It's your music. You should understand exactly how it's being released and why, and you should never feel like a passenger on your own project.
  • Marketing should match the music. No generic industry templates, no manufactured hype, no "#1 BEST label EVER." The story we tell about a release should sound like the artist who made it.
  • Small teams move faster. We don't have bloated structures or five layers of sign-off. That means quicker answers, fewer delays, and more of the energy going where it belongs — into the music.
  • You're not locked in. We work non-exclusively. Artists are free to release elsewhere; we'd rather earn the next release than trap you into it.

We're not a major label. We're a team of music lovers who believe in doing things differently.

What we actually do

Putting artists first only counts if there's real work behind it. In practice, that looks like this:

Release planning and rollout. We map out timelines and get your music onto streaming platforms properly — not just uploaded, but planned, pitched, and released like a real campaign instead of a file dropped into the void.

Art direction and visual identity. Cover art, campaign visuals, and a consistent look across your singles and projects, so your releases feel like they belong to something rather than landing as disconnected one-offs.

Campaign messaging and audience growth. We work out the angles — how to talk about a release, what to put in front of listeners, and how to grow a genuine audience instead of a spike of numbers that disappears the following week.

Honest A&R feedback. Before any of that, we tell you the truth about the music. Not to gatekeep — to help each track land as strongly as it possibly can. Honest, useful feedback is one of the most valuable things a label can give an artist, and one of the rarest.

Underneath all of it is a simple bias: we care about long-term careers, not quick wins. We'd rather help you build something that lasts than chase a single viral moment and move on.

The music

We're primarily an electronic label — EDM, dubstep, drum & bass and house are where a lot of our heart is. But we're not precious about genre. We're open to every style, and we release music we believe in regardless of the box it fits into. If it moves us, that's the only real qualification.

You can hear exactly where we're at, any time. Every single, EP and album we've put out lives on the Releases page, and you can meet the artists we're championing whenever you want to dig into the people behind the music.

How we work

If you've dealt with labels before, the difference is in the feel of it. We work like partners in the room with you — not a distant corporate machine you email and hope to hear back from. No endless meetings. No BS. Just results.

Whether you're dropping your first single or building toward an EP or an album, we treat it like it matters, because to you it does. That's the whole idea: a label based in Manchester, working globally, run by people who'd be making and listening to this music whether it paid the bills or not.

What comes next

This blog is part of that. From here, it's where we'll share the stories behind our records, introduce new signings, and talk openly about what we're building and why. Not press-release filler — the real version, from the people doing the work.

We're still early, and we like it that way. There's a version of this label a few years from now with a deep catalogue and a roster of artists who trust us with their best work. Getting there is the fun part, and we'd rather do it in the open than pretend we've already arrived.

Come and say hello

If you're an artist and any of this sounds like your kind of label, we'd genuinely love to hear what you're working on. Send us your demo — we listen to everything that comes in.

And if you're here for the music, welcome. Dive into our releases, get to know our artists, and stick around for what's next.

Either way — let's get your music heard.
